Basics Of Laying Flagstone

So I have been some vigorous research online these last few weeks, and I have noticed that with spring, comes new landscaping ideas. Personally, I have loved the idea of building a new flagstone patio because it not only gives your home a new look, but it adds VALUE to the home. It brings out a whole new aspect of landscaping.

So you are wondering how in the world do you install this flagstone? It is going to be hard to accomplish, and what tools are you going to need in order to get the job done. In fact, even the most outright mechanically challenged person can build a great looking flagstone, without paying an absolute fortune.

SO HOW DO YOU DO IT?

I know that you are eager to start, but just slow down a second. Do you really want to rush this project which can cause more problems down the road, or do you want to do it right the first time?

Like I said before, I have been doing some research online by trying to find videos, blogs, articles, etc, only to find that almost all of the tutorials are old or out of date. The video look great and yes, they will help you, but I feel as though I can’t keep up with what they are doing. They tend to go too fast, and don’t provide the real information such as…

-The tools you need to get started.

-What to look for when buying flagstone

-How to actually install the patio

- How to save money by doing it yourself.

So let me ask you this? If you have money, go ahead, contract out your flagstone work, but if you are like us, we hate spending money on things we know we can do ourselves.

This is why I have have been recommending Craig Smith to everything that passes through my blog. Not only is he in expert in flagstone patio installation, but he actually gives you a step by step guide on how to complete the process without spending a fortune.

Flagstone Patio Installation – Materials Needed!

When it comes to building or installing a flagstone patio, you will need a variety of tools order to get the job done.  For me, I make sure that I have everything together before I start digging, laying, or cutting the flagstone. So to help you out, I listed the basic materials that you will need in order to start installing your flagstone.

Materials For Flagstone Patio

- Hammer – You should have two types of hammers. First, you will need just a regular hammer for breaking up the flagstone. Use the flat end to break the pieces and the other end to make minor adjustments after breaking. You will also need a pound hammer. This will make it easy for you to break bigger pieces of flagstone.

- Chisels – Really any chisel will do but you will want a small and a large chisel. These will also be used for chipping away at the flagstone. You can get very detailed with chisels and they are highly recommended for any flagstone installation.

- Masonry Saw – If you are going to be installing a large flagstone patio, a masonry saw is a must have.  This will cut your time in half when you starting to break and chisel the flagstone

- Level & Chalk Line – This will be used to make sure everything is even and straight when it comes to installing your flagstone patio

- Transporter – A wheel barrel or some type of large holding container where you can store sand and cement.

- Shovels, Hoe, Etc – You will need shovels to dig and a hoe to even portions of your ground.

This should get you started!  Before you go out and by these materials for your flagstone installation, ask a neighbor or a friend if you can borrow them for the weekend. This will save you time and money. You could even get your buddy to help you out.

Till Next Time!

Cheers,

John

Laying Flagstone – Look & Feel Of Laying Flagstone

Laying Flagstone

Before you start laying your flagstone, you should way your options on the look and feel of your flagstone patio. What do you want it to look like after it is completed? Do you want have spaces in between your flagstone or do you want flowers? All of these details should come into consideration before you start any of your installation.

Look of Flagstone

Flagstone comes an so many different colors from red, green, white, blue etc. Flagstone is so unique because not once piece will be the same as another, making your patio look amazing rather than dull and boring.  When considering which colors you are going to use, you can either pick a variety of colors, or just one color.  Using a variety of colors will give it a very unique look while having similar colors will make it look more professional and complete.

Feel Of Flagstone

The Feel of flagstone is rarely talked about but it should be considered. You should decided on if you would like flat, rigid, bumpy, etc. Flat flagstone will have more of a shine, while bumpy and ridged flagstone will have a more of a dull effect. Either way, it is important to decide what will look best before you start installing.

More Looks Advice

The last thing to consider before laying your flagstone, is what you would like to place in between the flagstone itself.  A more classic look will have all of the flagstone tightly together with no spaces in between. The flagstone will have pieces that all look somewhat the same in shape, size, color, etc.  Another look that people tend to like is the more natural way. This is when you space your flagstone out so that you have room to grow plant grass, flowers, or whatever you would like in between your flagstone.  The flagstone will also have a more ridged and scattered look to it when it is completed.

Hope This Helps!

John

Biggest Mistakes People Make When Installing Flagstone

I have seen my fair share of mistakes when it comes to building, installing, or laying flagstone. The most obvious are the ones that you can see from a mile away such as cracks in the flagstone, stains, and discoloration.  Little less obvious mistakes include uneven flagstone, not allowing water to run off the edges, and small chips where they just simply messed up. Whether it is a huge mistake or a small mistake, there is always someone that will help you fix it.

Why People Make Mistakes?

The main reason why people, just like you and I, make mistakes when installing a flagstone patio is because they are in such a rush to get done. They want to see the end result without putting in the work. Another reason is because they feel like they are being rushed. This could be due to a change in weather or it is getting dark. Too many times people will feel rushed when really they don’t need to be.

Here are a few tips to keep you from rushing when it comes to installing flagstone.

1) Remember…There is no rush. Take as long as you want and do not miss a step. Once slight mishap could change the outcome of the installation.

2) Always know exactly what you are doing. That means don’t guess. Get advice from someone before implementing any serious changes from the initial plan.

3) Know exactly what everyone is doing. If more than one of you are installing flagstone, be sure to know exactly what everyone is doing so you do not cross paths.

4) Don’t get stressed out. Your installing flagstone to make your house more unique, not make it look worse. Take your time and do the job right the first way.

I hope this helps you when you decide to start installing your flagstone patio. Always remember to borrow tools from a friend and never rush.

Take It Easy,

John
